I received a suspicious phone call from a woman claiming to be from EDF. She said I had an outstanding debt, asked whether I could make a payment towards it, and took me through a security check. I explained that I had been accepted onto the EDF Customer Support Fund. Under my arrangement, the outstanding debt is on hold while I pay for my ongoing energy usage. After nine months, the debt will be cleared, provided I meet the fund’s terms. Despite this, the caller replied, “Yeah, but that's for ongoing usage. This debt needs to be cleared.” I explained that I had spoken directly with EDF the previous day and had already arranged payments for my ongoing usage following my acceptance onto the fund. I therefore should not be making separate payments towards the outstanding debt. When I challenged her about this, she abruptly ended the call. I found the call suspicious because the payment demand contradicted the arrangement I had confirmed directly with EDF. The number displayed also began with 0203 and was not one I recognised as belonging to EDF. I am reporting this because I am concerned that the caller may have been impersonating EDF in an attempt to obtain payment from me.
