Dragon Laady - Got an initially genuine call about Centrica shares. But a simple question led me to believe this is a scammer. I said that I do not discuss financial matters on the phone and they'd have to write.

mathieu - They said they were acting for a company wanting to mount a bid (week beginning Mon 25 May 2026). They had my details from a share register for a company that had been bought out in 2012/3, and wanted to buy my shares. I said I thought that my shares had been liquidated at the time of the takeover, but they persisted and sent me a non-disclosure agreement to sign before taking the matter further as their client wanted a complete news blackout. I tried to find them (Vertex Legacy Management) on the web using several different search engines but drew a complete blank. Also, the address they gave had no record of them as tenants. It might all be genuine, but I've told them I won't do anything without substantive evidence of the company's identity (such as the company's registration number). I'd suggest beware! Don't do anything unless you're absolutely certain it's not a scam and certainly don't give them any of your financial information.

Understanding Phone Scams

Scammers often make unsolicited calls, posing as representatives from trusted organizations such as your bank, HMRC or the police.

These calls can be either automated or made by a real person. The caller may ask for personal information, like your banking details, or urge you to transfer money urgently.

Your first step is to report the number here on WhosCalled. However many phone providers offer tools to help protect you from scam and nuisance calls. These may include:

Caller display - see who’s calling before you answer

Incoming call blocking - block unwanted numbers

Anonymous call rejection - block calls from hidden numbers

Its always best to just hang up on a caller if you suspect that something isn't quite right, check WhosCalled and see if others have reported the number first.
