Called whilst I was speaking to someone else, they held on for a long while, but finally gave up. When I finished my called, called them back to see what they wanted. The automated answer said "Thanks for calling the National Helpline" please press zero. I stupidly did, then it played an Americanised automated response "Thats great, we have saved your number and will call you back" !!!! ??? This sounds all very dodgy, so have blocked number.

This is a classic paid number scam. They use an automated machine to mass dial consecutive rows of numbers, get you to see the missed call, call them back, then charge you 65p per minute on mobile/ 16p per minute on land land + a 23p per minute “connection charge”. Please report and block to lock them out of the system. If everyone does, it’ll cost them more money to set up the infrastructure than they gain from callbacks.
